Community Development
We have a contract with Navajo Department of Transportation
which includes five road projects of which three have been completed.
The Township contracted with Keyah Construction Inc., this past summer
and completed the repair and asphalting of the streets in the NHA Housing
sub-division, identified as Projects AZ12-073, AZ12-050 and AZ12-113.
The second phase involves the expansion of sewer lines to accommodate
local business and service providers in the area including NHA, AZ DES
and Monument Valley Tire and Auto. The sewer lines have been completed
and the roadway in front of the DES building will be completed this summer
along with the repaving of Bashas entrance road due to the installation
of new sewer lines.

Additionally, the Kayenta Township Commission with Big Horse Engineering
have competed the scope of work for FY2003 Kayenta School bus Route in
the amount of $1,435,726.00 and for FY2004 Kayenta/NE Quad Corridor Road
Project in the amount of $1,055,000.00, and we are in the process of surveying
and engineering. It is anticipated that the 2 road projects will be ready
for construction in May of 2008.
Estimates have been completed for additional work to realign roadways
to accommodate a proposed traffic signal. This traffic signal will provide
a safe passage of our school children across U.S. Hwy 163, which is currently
very dangerous. The Township has set aside $97,000 for the construction
costs, as well as taking over the operational costs. Additional grants
funds are in the works from NNDOT for $97,000, Navajo County for $133,000,
KUSD for $133,000 and KCS for $30,000 to complete the project. When the
dollars are all accounted for and approvals are given, construction is
due to begin in the spring of 2008 along with the construction of the
additional roads being constructed by FCI Construction for the new KCS
School.
